Why this guide exists
The first time most visitors arrive at Labuan Bajo harbour, they get one of two reactions: total confusion (where do I go, which boat is mine, where is the ticket desk) or relief (it is small, it is friendly, locals point you in the right direction in seconds).
It is more the second than the first. But knowing the layout in advance saves 10 to 20 minutes of looking-around time, especially if your departure is at 05:00 in the dark.
The layout in one paragraph
Labuan Bajo harbour is shaped like a long shallow C facing west. The main road runs along the upper edge. From the road, you walk down a sloped ramp to the water level, where there are three piers (Pier 1 in the south, Pier 2 in the middle, Pier 3 in the north). Phinisi boats anchor offshore; smaller speedboats and day-trip boats use the piers directly. Behind the piers there is a row of warungs, ticket desks, dive shops, and the harbour office.
Which pier does my boat leave from?
It depends on the boat type:
- Day-trip speedboats and small wooden boats: Pier 2 (middle) most of the time. Some smaller operators use Pier 1.
- Open-deck day boats (slow, larger): Pier 3 (north) usually.
- Phinisi cruises (overnight): They anchor offshore. A small tender boat collects you from Pier 2.
- Public ferry to Sape (Sumbawa) and other Flores towns: Pelni terminal, slightly different location 500 m north along the road. Do not confuse this with the tourist boat harbour.
Your operator will tell you the exact pier and the meet-up time. If they have not, message them the day before. Standard practice is to meet at the ticket desk row 30 minutes before departure.
What is at the harbour besides boats
Walking from south (Pier 1) to north (Pier 3), at the back of the harbour you will find:
- A row of ticket desks for the main operators (signs in English)
- Three or four small warungs serving mie goreng, nasi goreng, and basic coffee
- A souvenir shop or two
- The Komodo National Park entry-fee kiosk (this is where you should pay your park fees, NOT on the boat)
- The harbour master's office (small building, blue roof)
- Public toilets (usable, paid IDR 5,000)
There is also a 7-Eleven and a small supermarket about 100 m up the main road if you forgot supplies.
When to arrive
For a 06:00 departure, be at the harbour by 05:30. For a 07:30 departure, be there by 07:00. Indonesian boat operations run on relaxed timing, but you do not want to be the one holding
the boat.
For Padar sunrise trips (departure 03:30 to 04:00 in dry season), the harbour ramp is dark. Wear shoes you can grip with. Bring a light layer; the harbour breeze is cool before dawn.
The most common confusions
- "My boat said Pier 2 but it is in front of Pier 3." Common: in busy season, boats anchor wherever there is space and your operator's WhatsApp message has the right one. Trust the latest message.
- "I paid the park fee on the boat — was I scammed?" Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Legit operators include the park fee in the package and provide a kiosk receipt. If your guide is collecting cash on the boat with no kiosk paperwork, that is a scam variant. Pay at the kiosk in the harbour yourself if unsure.
- "There is no ticket — they said my name will be on a list." Standard for day trips. The operator has a printed manifest at the dock with your name. Show your ID or the WhatsApp confirmation.
- "My driver dropped me at the wrong pier." The road runs parallel to the harbour. Walking from Pier 1 to Pier 3 takes 4 minutes. Just walk along the water-side path.
Eating at the harbour
The warungs at the back of the harbour are basic but cheap. IDR 25,000 to 40,000 for a full plate of nasi or mie goreng. Coffee is IDR 8,000 to 15,000. The food is fine for what it is, but the better restaurants are 5 minutes up the hill on the main road. If you have time before departure, walk up to Made's Warung, Lemo Lemo, or Treetop for a real breakfast.
How to get from the harbour to your hotel
- Walking: most hotels in Labuan Bajo town are 5 to 15 minutes uphill from the harbour. Doable if your luggage is reasonable.
- Grab/Gojek: works in town. IDR 15,000 to 30,000 to most central hotels.
- Bemo (open minivan): IDR 5,000 per person, follows the main road, but you need to know where to get off.

A final practical note
The harbour is small enough that you cannot really get lost. If something is wrong (wrong pier, missing meeting), the locals at the warungs and ticket desks will point you in the right direction in seconds. Indonesian harbour culture is friendly. Ask, and you will be helped.
